Jo has always has a passion for helping others. Her career started by following in her mother’s and grandmother's footsteps, pursuing a degree in nursing. Her nursing experience around the world has spanned across surgical wards, intensive care units, general practices, visiting patients out in the community and even internationally run clinical research trials. But her why of this company runs much deeper personally.
In 2022, having just celebrated her 40th birthday, Jo started having increasing bouts of palpitations, dizziness, nausea and faintness not just during times of stress or exercise, but in daily tasks such as showering or making dinner. With three young children to care for, she had an urgency to make sure she was at her best.
She made a visit to her GP who ran an ECG showing a normal rhythm but referred her to a cardiologist. There was a three month waitlist for an initial appointment.
After three months of attempting to manage symptoms, the cardiologist visit finally arrived, and another normal ECG rhythm was recorded. Given Jo's age and health, she was not in a high risk category which meant a 12 month wait to have a hospital provided holter monitor. The cardiologist mentioned that there were some smart watches with ECG technology that might be able to capture a reading so that he could have insights as to the severity of the issue.
Jo, having recently received a smart watch from her partner as a gift, went straight home to research it's functions. With luck she was able to capture some ECGs as she was going about her day for the cardiologist to review.
Within 24 hours of those ECGs being reviewed and analysed as Ventricular Tachycardia (VT), she was back at the hospital. An urgent echocardiogram was ordered, a holter monitor fitted, and a treatment plan started within the week.
This is the level and speed of care Jo wants to see for everyone, so they can get back to being their best selves for their loved ones.
With a stressed healthcare system, Jo and the team at Hire Health have set goals to provide resources for GPs to alleviate pressures in the system and for patients to be advocates in their own health care.
